We provide services to control and manage plants and algae within lakes and ponds through mechanical, physical, biological, and chemical control. We utilize the most advanced technologies available. Each lake, pond and wetland is different, therefore each body of water needs its own specific approach to invasive and nuisance species. Nutrient remediation is an innovative approach to minimize plant and algae growth.
We install and maintain submersed and surface aeration systems and fountains. Each system provides its own unique benefits, but all improve dissolved oxygen, which is a crucial factor for aquatic life and a healthy water body. Providing oxygen to a water body creates a healthy, more desirable environment for aquatic life and the people who live nearby. Submersed aeration systems are best for providing exceptional oxygen throughout the entire water column and are best for overall water quality. Fountains and surface aerators provide good oxygen and water circulation, while providing an aesthetics to a water body.
While nuisance aquatic plants can be detrimental to an aquatic ecosystem, other plants provide benefits. Native shoreline plants can aesthetically enhance a lake or pond. Planting native shoreline plants, such as irises, pickerel weed and duck potato help prevent nutrients from entering a lake or pond, which will limit submersed plant and algae growth. They stabilize the bank, prevent erosion, and provide habitat for aquatic life.
Water quality is the most important part of any healthy water body. Understanding the chemical and biological demands and how they affect the quality of the water is vital information for forming a plan to maintain your lake or pond. Nutrients, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus, are limiting factors for plant and algae growth. Understanding nutrient levels allows us to take initiatives to manage excessive plant and algae growth.
Stillwater understands that fish are especially important to many people. We can stock grass carp for vegetation control and tilapia for algae control. While grass carp and tilapia are effective biological controls, the do not provide instant vegetation control and should be managed each season for maximum results. When stocked at recommended rates, grass carp do not interfere with other fish or angling. We also stock largemouth bass, bream, and fathead minnows.
Billions of dollars are spent each year in the US managing invasive species that can decimate native populations in short periods of time. Invasive species can completely change your local ecosystem. This is no different in aquatics. We specialize in invasive species management for plants such as hydrilla, water hyacinth and giant salvinia. We have been managing invasive species for over 20 years throughout the eastern United States and can find the best solution tailored to meet your water body's specific needs.
We provide solutions for stormwater BMP repairs. We can install new devices and repair existing devices that our clients may need. We can assist with shoreline erosion, shoreline stabilization and even dredging. We can complete stormwater BMP inspections and outfall studies. We will provide you with yearly inspections for erosion repair, shoreline plantings, dredging and sediment removal, mowing and tree removal, rip rap repair and installation.
Knowing and understanding the depth of your lake or pond can be vital in managing that water body and determining your lake management budget. Often a big unknown for our clients, a bathymetric study of your water body can solve this problem. A bathymetric study will provide your accurate water volume, which can be helpful when forming a large lake treatment program and how much volume your water body can hold in the event of a large storm event. This study will also provide important baseline data for people or communities who want to know if they need to dredge. Dredging is an expensive project and if you do not completely understand the water depths and sediment depths, project costs are not going to be accurate.
Our management consulting services focus on our clients' most critical issues and opportunities. We can offer you our extensive knowledge in the areas of aquatics, water quality, wetlands, invasive species and fountain and aeration. We can provide services to educate local communities, HOA’s and private residents on stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) for runoff management and pollution control. We will also provide expertise on lake, pond and wetland management and answer any questions you may have to manage your water body.
